Thunderbird Archeology, a division of WSSI, is seeking Archeological Field Technicians for immediate temporary, project-based, full-time employment.

Responsibilities will include:

  • Participating in archeological survey, excavations and laboratory work under the direction of staff archeologists;

  • Artifact identification and processing;

  • Preparing accurate field notes and documentation;

  • Interpretation of soil strata, preparation of field maps depicting the locations of excavations, site/feature boundaries, historic standing structures, and other notable features within the project area.

Minimum qualifications include:

  • A Bachelor's degree in Archeology or a closely related field and successful completion of an archeological field school or at least three months of field experience;

  • Willingness to travel (per diem and lodging will be provided on projects more than approximately 90 miles from the office);

  • Physical ability to conduct archeological surveys in a variety of settings including urban and rural areas;

  • Physical ability to safely lift 50 pounds;

  • Physical ability to walk to and within project sites over a variety of different terrains in all kinds of weather and standing or walking for long periods of time;

  • Possession of a valid driver’s license.

WSSI is seeking a mid-level civil/environmental or biological engineer with a passion for wetlands, streams, and water resources. Projects include floodplain studies, dam safety analysis, low impact development, stormwater retrofits, and stream restoration. Ideal candidate will have from five to eight years of experience, PE (or EIT with ability to sit for exam within one year of starting), and experience in AutoCAD, AutoCAD Civil 3D, SWMM, HEC-HMS, HEC-RAS, and TR-55. Preference will be given to candidates with Rosgen (or equivalent) stream assessment and restoration training or significant floodplain analysis/FEMA LOMC processing. While an engineering background is preferred, candidates with a background in environmental science, landscape architecture, and/or hydrology and the technical ability to perform the aforementioned tasks will also be considered. Experience working with a diverse client base in both the public and private sectors is highly desirable. Bachelor’s degree required.

WSSI is looking for an experienced Senior Project Surveyor for our Gainesville, VA office.  The ideal candidate will have 8+ years' experience of field and office surveying practices and techniques with progressively increasing responsibilities.

DUTIES

Primary responsibilities of the position include computations, staff and job coordination, Civil 3D drafting associated with survey data including boundary, record plats, legal descriptions, topographic, construction, bathymetric, wetland and stream surveys, and developing and maintaining client relationships.

Candidate must be able to perform in a fast-paced environment with quick turnaround times, the ability to problem solve and communicate effectively, and the willingness to learn and take on new tasks.

REQUIRED

  • College Diploma or Certificate/Degree or related education in surveying and/or Computer Drafting/Design

  • 8+ years of progressive surveying/drafting work experience

  • Working knowledge of modern survey methods

  • Good working knowledge AutoCAD and Civil 3D drawings

  • Good working knowledge of Windows Explorer, Microsoft Word, Excel and Outlook

  • Ability to prioritize and multi-task with respect to projects, CAD standards, etc. on a daily basis

  • Ability to meet job requirements/requests to achieve deadlines

  • Ability to allocate time appropriate to projects based on deadlines

  • Ability to work overtime regularly

  • Strong attention to details while maintaining consistent work flow

  • Ability to work under minimal supervision & resolve issues independently based on project/company standards

WSSI is currently seeking a full time, entry to mid-level Ecosystem Technician. Primary duties will include but are not limited to: general maintenance and monitoring of wetland and stream mitigation sites, construction inspection of wetland and stream restoration projects, sapling nursery management,  hydraulic dredging, invasive species control, erosion and sediment control,  and LID/LEED building and landscape maintenance.  This position involves mostly outdoor work with rigorous physical labor and may occasionally involve working long hours. Typical work week is between 40-50 hours.

Required:

  • Bachelors degree in Environmental Science or related field

  • Possess a strong work ethic and works well in a team environment

  • Knowledge of wetland ecology and plant identification

  • Wetland and stream restoration experience

  • Able to lift 50lbs over head

  • Possess valid Driver’s License

  • Utilize good written/verbal communication

Job responsibilities will include Virginia Pollution Discharge Elimination System (VPDES) inspections and reporting, Stormwater Pollution Prevention Plan (SWPPP) development, and coordinating with federal and state resource agencies with regard to wetlands, erosion and sediment control and stormwater compliance. Willingness to work both independently and as a part of a team required. Experience working with a diverse client base in both the public and private sectors is highly desirable. A Bachelor’s Degree in environmental studies, wildlife biology, or related field required. Construction related experience is a plus.  Erosion and sediment control certifications are a plus, but not required (CPESC, CESSWI, CISEC, or Virginia DEQ Stormwater, Erosion, and Sedimentation Control Inspector Training & Certifications).
