Environmental Scientist: Millersville, Maryland

WSSI is seeking a mid-level environmental scientist with two to five years of experience. Job duties will include performing wetland delineations and forest stand delineations; preparing federal and state wetland permit applications; conducting rare, threatened, or species surveys; benthic macroinvertebrate studies; stream restoration support studies; and, coordinating with federal and state resource agencies with regard to wetland permitting issues. Strong knowledge of/experience in one or more of the following fields desired:  plant identification (including trees/shrubs), soil profiling, benthic macroinvertebrate collection/identification; and general natural history knowledge. Experience working with a diverse client base in both the public and private sectors highly desirable, with a willingness to travel regionally. BA/BS in biology, forestry, ecology, or closely related discipline required, MS desirable.

Urban Forester: Millersville, Maryland

WSSI is seeking a mid-level (or senior) candidate to be trained and mentored by a nationally recognized senior tree preservation expert and related skilled technical and management staff. Candidate should be experienced with performing specimen tree assessments (CTLA or TRAQ); reviewing civil, architectural, and landscape architecture plans, details, and specifications for conflicts with trees; and performing forest stand delineations/EVAs. The ideal candidate will possess the skills to work closely with design and construction management teams; prepare tree preservation plans, specifications, and details; prepare educational power points and workshops, proposals and marketing pieces; and other related technical skills regarding arboriculture and urban forestry. Background in urban forestry or landscape architecture is necessary, with strong knowledge of/experience of the following: arboriculture, tree preservation, tree root patterns and morphology, large tree transplanting, and forest and landscape plant identification (including trees/shrubs). Familiarity with the following is preferred: land clearing, site work, residential and commercial construction and renovations, campus, monument and historic sites, corporate, and underground utilities construction. Preference will be given to candidates who possess ISA Certified Arborist credential and have some GIS and/or CAD experience. Knowledge of the ecology of the Mid-Atlantic both natives and invasive species, and an interest in working both indoors and outdoors in varying terrain is required. Experience working with a diverse client base in both the public and private sectors highly desirable, with a willingness to travel regionally. On the job training will be provided by senior staff along with periodic workshops and classes. BS in forestry, landscape architecture, or closely related field is required.

Stream Restoration/Water Resource Engineer: Millersville, Maryland

WSSI is seeking a mid-level civil/environmental or biological engineer with a passion for wetlands, streams, and water resources. Projects include stream restoration, low impact development, wetlands mitigation design, and floodplain studies. Ideal candidate will have from five to eight years of experience, PE (or EIT with ability to sit for exam within one year of starting), and experience in AutoCAD, AutoCAD Civil 3D, SWMM, HEC-HMS, HEC-RAS, and TR-55. Preference will be given to candidates with Rosgen (or equivalent) stream assessment and restoration training. While an engineering background is preferred, candidates with a background in environmental science, landscape architecture, and/or hydrology and the technical ability to perform the aforementioned tasks will also be considered. Experience working with a diverse client base in both the public and private sectors is highly desirable. Bachelor’s required, Master’s preferred.

Senior Project Surveyor: Gainesville, Virginia

WSSI is looking for an experienced Senior Project Surveyor for our Gainesville, VA office.  The ideal candidate will have 8+ years' experience of field and office surveying practices and techniques with progressively increasing responsibilities.

DUTIES

Primary responsibilities of the position include computations, staff and job coordination, Civil 3D drafting associated with survey data including boundary, record plats, legal descriptions, topographic, construction, bathymetric, wetland and stream surveys, and developing and maintaining client relationships.

Candidate must be able to perform in a fast pace environment with quick turnaround times, the ability to problem solve and communicate effectively, and the willingness to learn and take on new tasks.

REQUIRED

  • College Diploma or Certificate/Degree or related education in surveying and/or Computer Drafting/Design
  • 8+ years of progressive surveying/drafting work experience
  • Working knowledge of modern survey methods
  • Good working knowledge AutoCAD and Civil 3D drawings
  • Good working knowledge of Windows Explorer, Microsoft Word, Excel and Outlook
  • Ability to prioritize and multi-task with respect to projects, CAD standards, etc. on a daily basis
  • Ability to meet job requirements/requests to achieve deadlines

Marketing Manager: Gainesville, Virginia

WSSI is seeking an energetic, organized and motivated leader for our Marketing, Business Development, and Sales efforts. The Marketing Department is responsible for a broad range of activities including an extremely high number of short, letter-type proposals, a small number of RFP responses, an aggressive branding effort primarily through conference and event participation, email and social media marketing, and a variety of other initiatives. The Department is working to model itself as a service provider to the rest of the company and prides itself on its strong culture of customer service.

The successful candidate will manage a staff of four-to-five while contributing to the daily tasks of the Department, interact with the technical leaders of the firm, and help the Department become even more effective in its mission of doing what needs to be done to bring in work. More specifically, they will manage and assist with the development and execution of marketing initiatives, which may include website updates, social media posting, creation of advertisements, creation of collateral materials, CRM management and data entry, presentation preparation and proposal writing. The company has a small, but growing number of branch offices and interaction with and some travel to these locations is required. In addition to managing and participating in the daily work of the Department, the successful candidate will also develop and lead the Department as it grows and evolves toward an even more effective execution of its mission.

QUALIFICATIONS

Bachelors Degree in Marketing or related subject or equivalent experience; 7-10 years of experience in marketing in the Engineering-Architecture-Construction industry, preferably with experience in Environmental Engineering. Experience in a leadership role is highly desirable.

Required skills include advanced writing and communication abilities, basic graphic design and social media, and a working knowledge of MS Office Suite and Adobe Creative Suite. Experience with CRM systems (the firm has adopted Cosential) is desirable.

Geographic Information Systems (GIS) Technician: Gainesville, Virginia

WSSI is seeking a GIS Technician to start immediately. 
This is a full-time position based in our Gainesville, Virginia office. 

EDUCATIONAL REQUIREMENT
A Degree in Geography, Cartography, or Environmental Sciences, with a Certificate in GIS is preferred. 

PRIMARY DUTIES

  • Generating custom and template maps for environmental and engineering staff using ESRI ArcMap and AutoCAD software.
  • Providing spatial data management including data entry, data creation, data acquisition, importing, exporting, editing, geo-referencing, converting and scaling between projections, familiarity with geodatabases.
  • Calculating drainage area divides, performing watershed analysis, historic map research and interpretation, aerial photograph interpretation, cultural/historic resources data management, and land cover classification.
  • Performing basic geoprocessing and working on existing python scripting.

MINIMUM REQUIREMENTS

  • Knowledge in the following software programs:  ESRI ArcGIS Pro, ArcGIS 10.x, AutoCAD, MS Word, MS Excel, MS Access, MS Powerpoint, Adobe Photoshop, Adobe Illustrator.
  • Experience with ESRI ArcGIS online
  • Desire to learn new skills related to GIS and AutoCAD.
  • Ability to read and understand engineering drawings.
  • Knowledge of cartographic design principles and data driven pages.

Internship - Summer 2018: Gainesville, Virginia

Applications accepted through March 1, 2018

Internship duties will include, but not be limited to, invasive plant control, groundwater monitoring, vegetation monitoring/transplanting, erosion control, stream enhancement/restoration, wildlife habitat improvement, hydraulic dredging, and general maintenance of constructed wetlands. Interns will also have the opportunity to participate in many in-house training courses. The applicant should have a strong interest in and knowledge of wetland ecology and possess a strong work ethic with the desire to gain experience in different aspects of environmental consulting. This internship involves a large amount of outdoor work with rigorous physical labor and may occasionally involve working long hours. Interns will be required to become Virginia Pesticide Applicator certified (involves a written test). Our internship program is an excellent opportunity to develop and improve on plant identification skills and provides the opportunity to rotate through different departments at WSSI (i.e., Environmental Services, Surveying, Archeology, etc.). Archeological Field Technician

Thunderbird Archeology, a division of Wetland Studies and Solutions, Inc., is seeking Archeological Field Technicians for immediate temporary, project-based, full-time employment.

Responsibilities will include:

  • Participating in archeological survey, excavations and laboratory work under the direction of staff archeologists;
  • Artifact identification and processing;
  • Preparing accurate field notes and documentation;
  • Interpretation of soil strata, preparation of field maps depicting the locations of excavations, site/feature boundaries, historic standing structures, and other notable features within the project area.

Minimum qualifications include:

  • A Bachelor's degree in Archeology or a closely related field and successful completion of an archeological field school or at least three months of field experience;
  • Willingness to travel (per diem and lodging will be provided on projects more than approximately 90 miles from the office);
  • Physical ability to conduct archeological surveys in a variety of settings including urban and rural areas;
  • Physical ability to safely lift 50 pounds;
  • Physical ability to walk to and within project sites over a variety of different terrains in all kinds of weather and standing or walking for long periods of time;
  • Possession of a valid driver’s license.

Ecosystem Technician: Gainesville, Virginia

WSSI is a seeking an entry to mid-level Ecosystem Technician to join our team in Gainesville, Virginia.

Primary Duties:

  • Construction inspection of wetland and stream restoration projects
  • General maintenance and monitoring of wetland and stream mitigation sites
  • Hydraulic dredging
  • Invasive species control
  • Groundwater well data collection and analysis
  • Stormwater Facility Maintenance
  • LID/LEED building and landscape maintenance
  • Read and follow maps; navigate (in vehicle and on foot) through a variety of terrains
  • Properly and safely drive, operate and maintain vehicle in a variety of terrains and surfaces (including ATVs and boats)

Required:

  • Bachelors degree in Environmental Science or related field
  • Knowledge of wetland ecology and plant identification
