Wetland Studies and Solutions, Inc.’s Environmental Science Energy Services Travel Team is seeking a mid-level environmental scientist with at least 4 years of experience performing integrated vegetation management along utility rights-of-way; wetland delineations; preparing technical studies related to aquatic resources; conducting endangered and threatened species (ETS) surveys; assessing potential impacts to ETS; and coordinating with federal and state resource agencies with regard to wetlands and ETS issues.  Experience with federal and state Clean Water Act permit applications is a plus.  Strong knowledge of/experience in one or more of the following fields: integrated vegetation management, vegetation management along utility rights-of way, vegetation identification, soil profiling; practical knowledge of natural history required.  Experience working with a diverse client base in both the public and private sectors highly desirable, extensive travel is required. POSITION FILLED: GIS Technician: Gainesville, Virginia

WSSI is seeking an entry-level GIS Technician (1 to 5 years GIS experience) to start immediately. This is a full-time position. A Degree in GIS, Geography, Cartography, or Environmental Sciences, and a Certificate in GIS is preferred.

PRIMARY DUTIES:

  • Generating custom and template maps for environmental and engineering staff using ESRI ArcMap and AutoCAD software.

  • Prepare detailed feature extraction workflows and rulesets using Trimble’s eCognition.

  • Providing spatial data management - which may include data entry, data creation, data acquisition, importing, exporting, editing, geo-referencing, converting and scaling between projections, and editing vector and raster datasets.

  • Calculating drainage area divides, performing watershed analysis, historic map research and interpretation, aerial photograph interpretation, cultural/historic resources data management, and land cover classification.

  • Performing basic geoprocessing and working on existing python scripting.

MINIMUM REQUIREMENTS:

  • Knowledge in the following software programs:  ESRI ArcGIS 10.x, AutoCAD, MS Word, MS Excel, MS Access, MS Powerpoint, Adobe Photoshop, Adobe Illustrator.

  • Advanced formal training in remote sensing, image analysis and LiDAR processing.

  • Experience using Remote Sensing software packages (e.g. eCognition, ENVI, ERDAS)

WSSI is seeking a Civil CAD Technician to provide drafting support to the Survey Department on environmental and water resources projects using AutoCAD 2018 and Civil3D 2018. Minimum one year of experience with a modern release of Civil3D required. Wetland Studies and Solutions, Inc. is seeking a mid-level surveyor (5+ years of experience) to join our Millersville, Maryland team.  Primary responsibilities of the position will include daily field work associated with land surveying practices to include boundary, topographic, construction, bathymetric, tree location, wetland and stream surveys, etc.  The preferred candidate should be a college graduate with a degree or course work in surveying, environmental sciences, forestry, wildlife management, or arboriculture. POSITION FILLED: Junior Accountant: Gainesville, Virginia
Wetland Studies and Solutions, Inc. (WSSI) has an immediate need of a Junior Accountant to work in a team environment to assist the other accounting staff and the Controller. This person must be able to perform basic accounting functions, work well with others and serve as a key support member on the accounting team. Responsibilities for this full time position will include but not be limited to: data entry, A/P processing, A/R processing and collections, billing assistance, filing, assisting supervisors with office administration tasks, resolving vendor inquiries, etc.

POSITION FILLED: Archeological Field Technicians: Gainesville, Virginia
Thunderbird Archeology, a division of WSSI, is seeking Archeological Field Technicians for immediate temporary, project-based, full-time employment.

Responsibilities will include:

  • Participating in archeological survey, excavations and laboratory work under the direction of staff archeologists;

  • Artifact identification and processing;

  • Preparing accurate field notes and documentation;

  • Interpretation of soil strata, preparation of field maps depicting the locations of excavations, site/feature boundaries, historic standing structures, and other notable features within the project area.

Minimum qualifications include:

  • A Bachelor's degree in Archeology or a closely related field and successful completion of an archeological field school or at least three months of field experience;

  • Willingness to travel (per diem and lodging will be provided on projects more than approximately 90 miles from the office);

  • Physical ability to conduct archeological surveys in a variety of settings including urban and rural areas;

Projects include stream restoration, low impact development, wetlands mitigation design, and floodplain studies. Ideal candidate will have from five to eight years of experience, PE (or EIT with ability to sit for exam within one year of starting), and experience in AutoCAD, AutoCAD Civil 3D, SWMM, HEC-HMS, HEC-RAS, and TR-55. Preference will be given to candidates with Rosgen (or equivalent) stream assessment and restoration training. While an engineering background is preferred, candidates with a background in environmental science, landscape architecture, and/or hydrology and the technical ability to perform the aforementioned tasks will also be considered.  POSITION FILLED: Ecosystems Technician: Gainesville, Virginia
Wetland Studies and Solutions, Inc. is currently seeking a full time, entry to mid-level Ecosystem Technician. Primary duties will include but are not limited to: general maintenance and monitoring of wetland and stream mitigation sites, construction inspection of wetland and stream restoration projects, sapling nursery management,  hydraulic dredging, invasive species control, erosion and sediment control,  and LID/LEED building and landscape maintenance.  This position involves mostly outdoor work with rigorous physical labor and may occasionally involve working long hours. Typical work week is between 40-50 hours.

Ideal candidate will have 2-5 years of previous experience, DEQ/COE regulatory experience is a plus. Minimum qualifications include B.A./B.S. in environmental planning, science or engineering and a basic knowledge of environmental regulations pertaining to 401/404 Clean Water Act and Chesapeake Bay Preservation Act; knowledge of AutoCAD®, local land development practices, NEPA, FEMA or FERC regulations is a plus.
