The Challenge

WSSI partners with Arlington County, an award-winning Smart Growth leader, in their efforts to provide sustainable solutions for an increasing urban population through capital improvement projects that benefit water quality and ecosystem health.

The Solution

WSSI provides environmental expertise and supports the County through an on-call contract for engineering services. Together we have accomplished a variety of tasks addressing:

  • Stream nutrient assessments for improving water quality to meet state and federal mandates
  • Water quality improvement project construction management
  • Stormwater management improvements through pond and outfall modifications
  • Invasive species management
  • Wetland and other jurisdictional waters delineation, impact permitting, and impact monitoring
  • Tree inventories and preservation plans

So far, our projects together include:

  • Ballston Pond: construction management, plan revisions, site inspections
  • Concord Mews Pond Retrofit: tree inventory and preservation planning, wetland and stream delineation and impact permitting, survey, feasibility analysis, project management, stormwater management retrofit design
  • Donaldson Run Headwaters, Tributary A: outfall stabilization design, design of stream repairs, nutrient reduction calculations, construction management and inspections
  • Donaldson Run Headwaters, Tributary B: stream survey, nutrient reduction calculations, permitting and regulatory coordination, construction inspections and monitoring, post-construction management
  • Four Mile Run Trail Connection (Potomac Yard and West Glebe Road Bridge): tree inventory and preservation planning, invasive species management, wetland and stream delineation and impact permitting, Water Quality Impact Assessment
  • Gulf Branch: survey, stream restoration design, public engagement, vegetation assessment, impact assessment, and permitting
  • Gulf Branch Reach 4 & 5 Assessments: Protocol 5 nutrient analysis
  • Rosslyn Area Potomac Interceptor & Columbia Pike/Sparrow Pond: sanitary sewer pipe stabilization, HUD categorical exclusion documentation
  • Safe Routes to School Project, Glebe Road and 18th Street North: tree inventory and preservation planning
  • Sparrow Pond: tree inventory and preservation planning, wetland and stream delineation and impact permitting, planting plan, construction management and inspections
  • Spout Run Deep Sewer Relining: endangered and threatened species assistance (northern long-eared bat)
