Leading the Way on Wetland Mitigation
WSSI has designed and constructed more than 1,000 acres of wetlands across 100 wetland mitigation sites required as part of the compensatory mitigation requirement for projects in the Mid‐Atlantic region. Our portfolio includes the first privately developed wetland mitigation bank in Virginia, as well as the first three in Northern Virginia – no other firm has successfully designed, constructed, maintained, and monitored more wetland acreage in the region.
Our Success Has Wildlife Flocking to Our Wetlands
The success of our mitigation projects is evident not only in meeting and exceeding all success criteria mandated by the governing Mitigation Banking Instrument (MBI), but also by the extensive and diverse spectrum of plant and animal species that inhabit the wetlands. For example, our Cedar Run Wetlands Bank represents the largest mitigation bank in the D.C. metropolitan area. This approximately 715-acre wetland bank hosts countless numbers of breeding frogs and toads in the spring and attracts thousands of wetland-dependent bird species such as herons, egrets, waterfowl, gulls, and shorebirds. To date, more than 125 bird species have been recorded including northern harriers, osprey, hawks, falcons, and bald eagles.
